Rose Elkovitch, Founder
Rose
Elkovitch organized the Waterway Women Artists in 2001 when she
realized that
she knew three other artist/first mates in the Stuart Florida area who
had
similar experiences in boating and painting. It would be fun to
show
together, combining ideas and talents and sharing the tasks.
Before long, two other live-aboard artist-sailors joined the
group, bringing it to
six.
Rose's boating life began early in her marriage to Frank who was
a General Motors engineer in Michigan. They and their 3 daughters
sailed the Great Lakes for several years until Frank's retirement.
Then, since the girls were grown and gone from home, Rose and
Frank and the family cat brought a sailboat named Esprit de Lune
through the Erie Barge Canal, the Hudson river and the ICW to south
central Florida where they lived for 9 years.
Boating has been a large part of her life and was instrumental in
rekindling her love of creating art. Her work has been a blending of
romantic realism and postimpressionism. Color and light inspire
her land, sea and skyscapes. Her portraits, florals and still
lifes also evoke her distinctive approach to color and form.
In her own words,
"The process of making art moves my soul and when the results
touch the soul
of another, the process is complete."
In 2002, Rose and
Frank decided to relocate to Boise, Idaho. While no longer a
member of the Waterway Women Artists group, she continues to paint and
is fully involved with art activities in her new locale.
